With the Hohe Straße, which starts at the Cathedral, Cologne can claim to have the first pedestrian zone in Germany. Today major parts of the inner city and old town – and thus many sights – can be reached without the disturbance of car traffic.

Apart from the shopping district around the Schildergasse and Hohe Straße, the area around Breite Strasse offers in particular the opportunity to stroll around an enormous variety of different kinds of shops, small boutiques, relaxing street cafés and well known galleries. Since the construction of the ‘Rheinufer’ tunnel in the eighties the Cologne Old Town lies directly adjacent to the Rhine again, being linked to it by a large pedestrian zone.
