LeverkusenLeverkusen on the River Rhine is a big city with many different sides to it. Around 160,000 people live here – in both urban areas as well as rural idyll. Village charm and pulsating city life are here often only a few kilometres from each other, sometimes next to each other. An industrially defined city – the world famous company Bayer AG is also based here – Leverkusen is, meanwhile, known throughout the world. Yet it also has much more to offer – it is a great place to relax with plenty of open green spaces, particularly by the foothills of the Bergisch Land and the romantic Rhine »beach« in the north.
Neuland Park and Forum Leverkusen A real jewel has been created on the terrain of the National Horticultural Exhibition (Landesgartenschau) in Leverkusen, which last year attracted over half a million paying visitors: Neuland Park not only lures visitors with its large number of gardens and meadows right on the Rhine, but also with its special backdrop: because it is located in the immediate vicinity of the Rhine bridge and Bayer Works, the green oasis is embedded in an industrial culture. The Forum Leverkusen in the centre of the city, between Cologne and Düsseldorf, has the best »sandwich position«. It combines all the possibilities of an arts centre, including a theatre hall, with those of a modern congress and conference centre. In Leverkusen, the arts are well represented from more than one viewpoint: during each playing season there are two cultural schedules. |

Japanese Garden In the Japanese Gardens located at the base of the Bayer head-quarter building, Leverkusen boasts one of Germany’s most exotic parks, distinguished by unusual plants and structures such as bridges and Torii (Japanese gateways). The genesis of this garden lies in a visit to Japan by Carl Duisberg, Chairman of the Bayer Group in the 1920’s.

Morsbroich Castle This Baroque castle is now a municipal museum for modern art which provides the setting for theatrical productions and other cultural events under the title »Morsbroich Summer«. The castle’s name stems from a knight with the surname »Mohr« in the 13th century. In 1948 the castle was leased, and in 1974 sold, to the city of Leverkusen, and subsequent renovations have restored its glamour.
