As Cologne's property market has remained stable, the traffic connection is good and Cologne is one of Germany's leading media cities, the climate for investments in property is favourable. The rent in the best locations is one of the highest in Germany (190 Euro/qm) and many new projects are in the process of development. In the south of the town center for example the former docklands are changed into 235,000 qm of flats, offices, restaurants and cultural institutions.

It doesn't matter if you want to buy a house or rent a flat - the propterty market in Cologne has a vast range of offers. In the saturday issue of the newspaper Kölner Stadtanzeiger you can find many advertisements concerning property both from estate agents and private persons. Another possibility when searching for a real estate is the internet where there are online property markets for Cologne. Prices can vary strongly but just to give you an idea: the price for a square meter in a flat with 60 square meters of floor space is mostly just a little bit more than 10 Euro.

Short Time Renting

If you stay in Cologne just for a couple of months the traditional property market with flats and houses might not be the right thing for you. If you do not want to stay in a hotel the whole time, which is quite expensive, you might want to rent a furnished room. There are some agencies which have specialized on the short time renting of furhished rooms. But staying in a hotel for a longer period can also be advantageous. Some hotels have special services for long-term guests such as laundry service and the carrying out of simple office work.

Accomodation for Students

In a town with such a big university as Cologne a reasonably priced room or a small flat are not easy to get hold of. Even small flats can be quite expensive. The best conditions are to be found in the halls of residence but usually there are long waiting lists full of people who want to get a room or an appartment. While looking for a room on the spot the youth hostel can be an useful place for the night.
