Modell of the Odysseum - landscape layer from above |
Top-rate research of international rank goes under the label Made in Cologne. Research potential is concentrated in the Cologne region like in hardly any other area: with a total of nine schools of higher education, Cologne today ranks as one of Europe's most attractive centres of higher education. Over 85,000 students have selected Cologne as their place of study. 62,000 students alone attend the University of Cologne, which is thus not only the oldest (founded as a municipal university in 1388), but also the largest in Germany. With its 10 faculties alone, the university of applied sciences offers more practically-orientated study courses. For future musicians and music teachers, the Music College is one of the best in Germany. In recent years, the Art College for Media has become increasingly important, since the cathedral city has rapidly developed into one of the country's media strongholds. The German Sports College, located in the city's 'green belt', not only offers sportsmen/women and students education and training, but also makes its sports facilities available to all other citizens of Cologne at certain times. As a rule, the numerous events of these universities and colleges are open to all visitors, and enrich the cultural range of the city. Since the end of the Eighties, Cologne also hosts the largest and most diverse recruitment event in Germany - a must for students, graduates and young professionals with up to five years of work experience. Twice a year in June and November, more than 12,000 graduates are meeting the personnel managers of 400 national and international companies. Not a conventional museum but an interactive technology presentation will be the »Odysseum«. The Municipal Savings Bank of Cologne has donated this center to the city celebrating its 175th. anniversary in 2001. The Odysseum will be constructed on an former industrial site and exhibits the main attractions of the Expo 2000 in Hannover. The opening of the center is scheduled for 2008. |
