| The City |
|
In a study, 83 German cities were put under the microscope. Cologne came a proud second in this city test. The cathedral city was, above all, able to distinguish itself as a metropolis with the highest growth potential. This may, in particular, be thanks to the flourishing Cologne media industry. Yet it is mainly the so-called soft location factors that go to make up the »feel good character« of the city, namely clear Veedel and yet a city atmosphere, a wide-ranging nightlife and international restaurants, an extensive range of museums, theatres and music events as well as stacks of addresses for sport and wellness. |

The »Grand Tour« to the Romantic Rhine, with which Thomas Cook, among others in England during the 19th century, rang in the era of modern group travel, started or ended in Cologne. That remains the case today: every tourist on the Rhine must have seen Cologne Cathedral. Not only because it is rightly one of the world`s most famous buildings, but because it thanks its completion, after 632 years of construction, to that enthusiasm for the middle ages and Gothic art, which the Romantic age had kindled. |

As a music city, Cologne now enjoys an international reputation - and that is, in particular, because music of all eras and styles is presented on a high, topical level, and also, because artistically fruitful encounters are also sought beyond traditional borders. The powerfully pulsating heart of this Cologne music culture, is the philharmonic hall built in the cathedral mound, which seats 2,000 people. Since its opening in 1986, it has become one of the leading international concert halls. With over 400 events per year, it presents world-famous orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs and soloists. In the blue Musical Dome, directly next to Cologne's main railway station, the famous Queen songs can be heard every night when the Musical "We Will Rock You" fills the audience of up to 1,600 people with enthusiasm.

In Cologne everything, or almost everything, began with the Romans. To be more precise, with Gaius Julius Caesar. In 54/53 B.C., he extended the borders of the Roman Empire as far as the Rhine and formed an alliance with the Germanic tribe of the Ubii.
The Cathedral is the heart of the City of Cologne. It forms the centre and provides the measure for everything else. 144 metres long, 86 metres wide and with 157-metre-tall spires. It stands on a flat-topped hill that has been a place of worship since the beginning of the city's history. Excavations on the site have uncovered remains of a Roman heathen temple, but also traces of an early Christian church, which was probably extended in the 6th century and replaced by a Carolingian Cathedral in the 9th century.

Cologne has more than 4,000 pubs, restaurants and alehouses No other German city has as many pubs and even first-class restaurants considering the number of the inhabitants.
When you ask guests (many local residents are sure to agree) the extended area around the Cathedral is the target for a shopping spree.
Hardly any wishes are left unfulfilled, at least they are only limited by the size of your purse and what you can carry home. In the central pedestrian zones around the Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse, from morning till night crowds of shoppers are attracted to jeans and jewels, snacks and shoes, cafes and cinemas, banks and boutiques, pubs, department stores, bagpipe players, Mozart-playing violinists. And the shopping continues in the Mittel, Ehren and Breite Straße and their side-streets.
